Materials & Coatings Guide
Choose the right material and finish for maximum coil longevity. From standard aluminium fins to Heresite-coated copper — matched to your environment.

Not all cooling environments are created equal. From salt-laden air to chemical exposure or high humidity, harsh conditions can dramatically shorten coil life. At HC Coils, we offer a range of construction materials and protective coatings — selected to match your operating conditions, duty and budget.
Fin Materials
| Material | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminium | HVAC, indoor, standard duty | Excellent thermal transfer |
| Copper | Aggressive environments | Best performance but higher cost, longer service life |
Protective Coatings
| Coating | Ideal For | Protection Level |
|---|---|---|
| Polyester on Aluminium | Light industrial, humid air, indirect exposure | Basic barrier against moisture/corrosion |
| Heresite on Aluminium or Copper | High-corrosion, coastal, chemical plants | Excellent for aggressive gases and salts |
| Epoxy | Chemical processing, acid/alkali exposure | Resistant to a wide range of acids, solvents and caustic media. Suitable for immersion service. |
| Phenolic | Petrochemical, refinery, high-temperature chemical | Superior chemical and heat resistance (up to 200°C). Excellent for concentrated acids and hydrocarbons. |
| Tin on Copper | Hospital HTM spec, high-humidity | Good protection to copper |
| BlyGold on Aluminium or Copper | Corrosion, coastal, chemical plant fins | Full coil protection after assembly |
| BronzeGlow | General corrosion protection | Full coil protection after assembly |
Process Industry & FDA Compliance
For pharmaceutical, food contact and regulated process applications, we supply coils with materials and documentation to meet your compliance requirements.
- FDA 21 CFR / EC 1935:2004 — Materials suitable for food and pharmaceutical contact applications. Declaration of conformity available on request.
- GMP-Compatible Construction — Smooth internal surfaces, crevice-free joints and cleanable external finishes for pharmaceutical cleanroom and process environments.
- EN 10204 3.1 Certificates — Full material inspection certificates with traceability from raw material to finished product. Supplied as standard for process and pharmaceutical orders.
- PED 2014/68/EU — Pressure-containing components manufactured to PED Categories I–IV with appropriate conformity assessment. Hydrostatic test to 1.5× design pressure.
- ATEX Compatibility — Coolers available with ATEX-certified motors and Ex-rated control panels for classified hazardous areas (Zone 1 and Zone 2).
Casing Materials
- Galvanised Steel (standard) — Economical, suitable for non-corrosive locations.
- Stainless Steel (304/316) — Ideal for food, pharma, washdown or exposed locations.
- Powder Coated Galvanised — Good protection with colour options available.
How to Select the Right Finish
Consider these factors:
- • Is the coil exposed to outdoor air, salt or chemicals?
- • Is cleaning or maintenance frequent or restricted?
- • What is the expected service life?
- • Is thermal efficiency more important than durability?
Still unsure? We're happy to help you balance cost, performance and lifespan for your project.
