    Direct Expansion Air Cooling Coils

Our Direct Expansion (DX) Air Cooling Coils are engineered for both air conditioning and process cooling applications. Designed for compatibility with HFC and HCFC refrigerants, these coils deliver efficient and reliable performance across a wide range of systems. Each coil is individually designed and bespoke to suit ducting, plenums, and air handling units (AHUs), ensuring optimal integration and performance.

    Construction & Specification

Our coils are built to the highest standards using premium materials:

    • Seamless drawn copper tubes manufactured to EN12735-2
    • Mechanically expanded into aluminium fins with die-formed self-spacing collars
    • Copper return bends, liquid distributors, and tubular headers silver brazed for durability
    • Heavy gauge galvanised steel casing for a rigid and robust structure
    • Tube end plates designed to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction

    Drainage System

    • Standard vee-formed drain trays with air baffles to prevent bypass
    • BSP(M) drain connections included
    • Optional perforated bottom plates for integration with customer drain systems

    Moisture Management & Water Carryover

Condensate management is critical for efficient coil operation. Factors such as:

    • Face velocity
    • Fin spacing
    • Coil height
    • Latent cooling rate (SHR)

    can influence water carryover.

Systems with high fresh air content are particularly susceptible. Our design engineers can recommend solutions such as:

    • Moisture droplet eliminators (minimum additional depth: 180 mm)
    • Intermediate drain pans to prevent condensate build-up
    • Optimised downstream drainage configurations

    Trapping & Drainage

Proper condensate trapping is essential to prevent flooding and air blowback:

    • Drain lines must be correctly trapped
    • Designed for both positive and negative pressure systems
    • Drain-to-tundish configurations supported

    Modular & Stacked Coil Options

    For large installations:

    • Coils can be supplied in multiple sections for easier handling
    • Each section includes its own drain pan
    • Integrated drainage systems allow condensate to flow to a main collection tray

Our engineers will advise on the most cost-effective configuration.

    Performance & Design

All coils are selected using advanced computer software to ensure:

    • Optimal thermal performance
    • Efficient refrigerant flow
    • Minimal pressure drop

Each unit is tailored precisely to meet your system requirements.

    Common Questions — DX Coils

A DX (direct expansion) coil evaporates refrigerant directly within the coil tubes to cool air. A chilled water coil uses cold water or glycol circulated from a remote chiller. DX coils require specific circuiting, distributor sizing and superheat control — different to water coil design.
