800kW Dry Air Coolers for the Brighton Dome Refurbishment

In 2017 HC Coils were specified as the preferred supplier for 2 High-Specification 800kW Dry Air Coolers to be installed on the roof of the historic Grade 1 listed Brighton Dome. Despite their relatively large cooling duty, the units were a compact V configuration, and featured low noise and enhanced efficiency EC fan assemblies. The Heat Exchanger Coils were specified with copper fins with additional Blygold corrosion protection to ensure a long service life in this coastal environment.

The bespoke units had to meet a strict noise level requirement due to the planning permission constraints and acoustic requirements of the building for performing arts and events. The EC fan assemblies offer the lowest possible noise level whilst still operating at a high efficiency which meant we were able to custom design a solution to meet this criteria.

Due to the final location of the Dry Air Coolers we had to work with a number of specialist contractors to plan and execute a rooftop installation without the use of cranes.

A helicopter piloted by Helirig flew in to Brighton at first light one October morning to position the two Dry Air Coolers which were carefully lowered into position as part of a significant program of ongoing work to restore and refurbish the Royal Pavilion Estate.

The coolers will provide climate control for Brighton Museum and the Dome Concert Hall. They replaced units that had to be taken out to allow restoration of the building to create new public galleries and a creation space.

The Royal Pavilion Estate is made up of the Royal Pavilion, Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Brighton Dome Concert Hall, the Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre, with the Royal Pavilion Garden linking the buildings. Attracting more than 1.2 million people a year, the estate's venues make a significant cultural and economic contribution to Brighton & Hove's residents and visitors.
